outdoor shooting

w/the weather getting warmer, we took gideon for an "outdoor photo shoot" yesterday. i was trying to convince suhee that we don't need to go to a studio to get his pictures taken. i used my nikon 85mm, 1.8. it's pretty good at getting that "creamy bokeh" effect.

indoor shooting: sigma 30mm, 1.4
outdoor shooting: nikon 85mm, 1.8
me & my budget are trying to convince myself that i don't need any other lenses for now.

nice picture! sharp. DOF at f/1.8 is really shallow so it requires a lot of care (and squinting) to get it sharp on focus. =)

and here's my response to your question:

i've tried out nikon's 80-200 f/2.8, 55-200 VR, AND 70-200 f/2.8 VR so i can give you a pretty good review. =)

80-200 f/2.8 will be handy for you and i recommend it!

i use 24-105mm f/4L and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS for my canon. the 70-200 is mighty heavy and it hurts my wrist after holding it for a while- it's made of solid metal. 80-200 is built tough, but not as heavy as my 70-200 (nikon's 70-200VR is about the same weight as my canon). having f/2.8 is nice when shooting portraits or events coz you'll have nice background blur and plenty of light will hit the sensor for faster metering/focusing and reasonable shutter speed indoors.

80-200 is actually a bargain. nikon stopped production of this lens recently so many stores are running low on inventory (which could mean a replacement is coming... but not soon).

ken rockwell talks a lot of good things about 55-200VR - but i think you'll appreciate f/2.8 a lot more than VR with your shooting style.

hope it helped~ :)
