mark driscoll's book

mark driscoll's book (confessions...) is a brutally honest account of how he planted & grew his mega-church while he was still in his twenties. even though very few pastors are called to plant a mega-church with thousands of members, this book shares a lot of wisdom about church ministry in general. & it is so funny & entertaining.

mark driscoll is known to be controversial & offensive. it's funny how he mentions several accounts of himself cussing people out. & he mentions several accounts of angry people coming to his house just to cuss him out.

he talked about how he hated doing college ministry. here's how he described his college ministry: "What they did not need was to hang out with the same immature yahoos they spent all their time playing 'pull my finger' with anyway and going to a free event that was like a day care for twenty-one-year-old hormonally enraged porn addicts and video-game aficionados trying to stretch junior high into the retirement years."

i thought it was awesome how he started an early morning prayer meeting for men to come to before going to work. & he used that meeting to allow men to show their commitment in wanting to become leaders. (sounds so korean-style)

why do men love cars?

it's so weird how most men (despite their age/background/culture) love cars. car-lust is truly a universal language. today i was driving on route 17 & i heard an engine revving so loudly that it sounded like i was at a racetrack. it turned out to be a red ferrari. three wannabe-cars chased after the ferrari. an audi s4, a camaro w/racing stripes & a wrx (me). the ferrari kept slowing down & then speeding up just to show off the sound of his engine (as we all grinned w/excitement). it's funny how something so stupid got us so excited.

retreats & bacon

this past weekend we had our church retreat. it was a great time of good fellowship, prayer & food. some of our guys decided to cook the costco bacon on the outdoor charcoal grill. it was so good. probably the best bacon i ever had.

fasting & feasting

today is ash wednesday, which marks the beginning of lent. i challenged our church members to fast from something worldly & feast on something godly during lent. i made a personal commitment to fast from shopping (including internet browsing), & to feast on worship. yesterday i pulled out my cheap electric keyboard in order to spend more time in personal worship.

giants "shocked the world"

last night was an amazing superbowl game. definitely the best one i can remember watching. the giants beat the odds by making it to the big game & then they "shocked the world" by winning the big game.

there's a superstitious side of me that truly believes that when i move to a city their sports teams receive a special dispensation of grace.

i moved to chicago in the summer of '91. that was when michael jordan & the bulls won their first nba title. i lived in chicago throughout the 90s, & that was the decade of the bulls.

i moved to queens/ny in 2000. that was when the mets & yankees made it to the world series in the famous, "subway series".

i moved to seoul/korea in 2002. that was when korea co-hosted the world cup & made it to the semi-finals.

& i recently moved to new jersey. & as you know the giants just won the superbowl. truly amazing.
